Now that I think I got this video downloading stuff figured out I can post a few more. This was Ben's new toy drone. The first one is a test flight that was taken over the IDPA guys alone with our. Really cool. The others were Jr's run and a few more. Enjoy.

Very cool. I had asked a while back on bullethose.com if anyone had tried using one of those to film shooting matches.

One of the primary concerns was whether or not it created a distraction for the shooter. It's hard to tell due to the wide-angle lens, but it appears the drone was far enough away / overhead as to not be directly in the shooter's line of sight.

Any complaints form any of the shooters? Concerns?

Also, what kind of drone are you using? I had been looking at one like this. But I'm wondering if it would provide good enough video, or if something a little higher-end would be justified.

The drone is noisy. Sounds like a swarm of hornets but it was far enough away as not to be distracting. I don't know what brand it is but I am sure that Ben will post that info.

A couple of weeks before the match, I had a conversation with Ben about his drone. Thinking I needed one too, I checked the price... I don't need one nearly as much as I initially thought. http://www.amazon.com/DJI-Phantom-Vi...keywords=Drone

The video's stability and clarity is impressive, and I'm not sure how well a lesser video drone would preform. Obviously you can't fly this too close to the match participants and potentially expose them to the risk of a crash, but I'll bet the you could shoot some impressive sub gunning drone video in a "private" setting.

I had mags loaded and gear packed, all ready to shoot my new Uzi in the match. Sadly I came down with a nasty bug that kept me in bed for two days.

Well, it's like anything else. The one I linked to goes for $250-$300, has an HD camera, and is controlled through your smart phone or tablet. At that price, I could probably buy one just to play with.

At the other end of the spectrum, I had an inspection company do a demonstration of the drones they use for industrial boiler, smokestack, and transmission line inspections. It's got a high-end camera on a gimble. They were yawing the coptor probably 30 degrees either direction, and the image on the screen stayed perfectly flat and level. Very impressive. I got a quote for $60K to buy the system. I think if we use it, we'll just pay them $20K for them to do the inspection for us. It's still much cheaper than erecting scaffolding inside a 200' tall boiler.

    Their drones look like this:

Initially I felt I could get by "on the cheap" with one in the $300+ range, but I don't think I'd be satisfied. Every time I get cheap, I get stung. The one you linked to appears to have a styrofoam body which makes me question the durability of the other components. With my luck, I'd break this little toy into several pieces the first time out.

It seems you begin to get approach something slightly above toy status when you hit $500. I'm tempted, but not sold. I suspect we'll see quality units drop in price sooner rather than later. Fortunately, I no longer have to be the first kid on the block these days, but it is very cool.
